Summary: The VW Bug |
| |
This little steam cleaner isn't only a cute, Bug-looking appliance, but it really works! It puts out a pile of steam, getting floors, stoves, showers and those areas on the toilet that never see daylight CLEAN and SANITIZED. It kills mildew on shower curtains. Eliminates the need for toxic chemicals while getting grout nicely cleaned. The steam evaporates quickly, so it's even safe to use on wooden floors.
Notice, however, that this steamer won't clean your house on it's own. It's still going to take some effort. But at least your time and energy isn't wasted, because things really do come nicely clean.
The only drawback with this cleaner is that the manual doesn't come with user suggestions. Experimentation is your only option. Thank goodness it's easy to use, and it makes housecleaning a tiny bit more fun.

Summary: Very useful if you understand its limitations |
| |
I've had this steam cleaner for about 6 weeks and have found it to be an excellent addition to my cleaning tool arsenal. It does have its limitations, however.
The positive features is that it's easy to setup and use, and the compact shape makes it easy to find a place to store it when you're not using it. Setup is a snap - just attach the handle using one screw, and the manufacturer is thoughtful enough to provide an extra long, thin screwdriver since the handle screw is recessed. Nice touch. Also comes with a lot of attachments for pretty much anything you'd want to clean (grout lines, counter tops, floors, windows, BBQ grills, etc.).
The biggest plus is the price. I've looked at steam cleaners for years, but was always put off by the steep price tags. Some of the high end European models run $1,500 or more - for that kind of money, I'd rather pay someone to clean for me! So, a low price is a big plus.
BUT, this low of a price means you're not getting the functionality of a high end machine. For example, the steam is pretty wet, and you'll also get a big dribble of water when you start up after pausing for a few moments. The tank is rather small, and you can't add more water without letting it cool down first. The attachments are OK in terms of function, but wear at a fairly fast rate. Build quality is good for the price paid, but you'll need to take care that you don't damage the wands since they are all plastic.
All in all, however, I'm happy with this. It makes it much easier to clean grout lines on my kitchen counters and floors, which is the main reason I got it. Again, it's not magic - you still need to put some work into it, but it's much, much, MUCH easier than using a scrub brush. What works well for me is to spray on some grout and tile cleaner first, let it set for a moment, then hit it with the steam. Wipe up with a clean microfiber towel and move on to the next section. I can do an entire room in the time it used to take me to do a small area with my trusty scrub brush.
I've also have had good results using it to clean soap scum off tiles and shower doors, getting in the nooks/crannies around faucets and toilets, and cleaning drips/spills in the oven and on the range top. Light to moderate dirt/grime comes up with just steam. More intensive messes (or ones that are very greasy) need to be sprayed first with a spray cleaner (409, Fantastic, or whatever brand you like) to help the steam do its work.
And remember, it just sprays steam - it does not suck it back up like a carpet cleaner. Keep a towel handy to wipe up the water and loosened dirt. Microfiber works best, but any absorbent rag will do.
Couple of points to keep in mind:
1) Use distilled water, especially if you have hard water. A build up of scale/mineral deposits will kill a steam cleaner very quickly.
2) Wear ear plugs if you're working in a small room (such as a bathroom). The noise level can really get to you after 20 minutes or so.
3) There's another model made by McCulloch that is exactly the same as this except that it has a slightly longer hose and a different colored casing. Pick whichever one happens to be on sale/best price - they are functionally identical.

Summary: Continuous steam mode does not last long |
| |
I just purchased this unit for cleaning my Armstrong kitchen floor. I filled it with 2 cups of water (32 oz) which is supposed to yield about 30 minutes of steam. I waited for the red light to go out which indicates 'steam ready' (just the opposite from the way you would expect an indicator light to work). I was using the extension wands with the floor brush and attached the provided cloth towel. I set the steam lock button for continuous steam. The initial burst of steam was good, but after about 15 seconds, the indicator light came on and the steam output and pressure was considerably diminished. I waited for the indicator light to go out and got about another 15 seconds of good steam pressure. I got frustrated with the starting and stopping and waiting for the steam ready each time. What is the purpose of the steam lock switch if you cannot get continuous steam? Have other users noticed the 'steam non-ready' light comming on frequently? Have other users noticed the reduced steam output when the indicator light is on? I do not think my unit is defective but have decided to return it.

Summary: Makes deep cleaning easy! |
| |
Purchased 20 year old home to renovate and clean for 84 year mom. Grease all over existing modern kitchen was so bad, I thought I would have to rip out the kitchen too. The smaller SF-250 version of this little machine ate through the grease and deep cleaned everything to like new condition. I did use a slightly abrasive sponge on the areas as I steamed, and then just wiped it dry. It also did a great job on storm window tracks, ceramic tile bathrooms and floors, toilets, faucets, and caulking, and all the other little corners I would have been scrubbing with a tooth brush. I left this one to mom and bought the SF-275 for myself - it holds more water. They both work great on wheels and buggy car grills too - and are environmentally safe.

Summary: Outstanding product, great accessories, fast delivery |
| |
This arrived a day before I expected it. I hadn't paid much attention to the accessories and was nicely surprised to find a wealth of cleaning attachments. Assembly required a single Phillips head screw and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that a high quality screwdriver with a magnetic tip was included for convenience. That step alone tells me someone is thinking about their customer.
The unit set up in about 2 minutes. The whole thing gave an impression of high quality. It seems to have more than enough power to accomplish its mission in the kitchen and bath. I can already see that it will be useful in cleaning the grill outside, my motorcycle engine and much more.
This would be a bargain at twice the price!
